The Home Music Club of Toronto

Founded 1897

Amateur musician?  Former or current professional who loves chamber music?  Want to meet similarly-minded people in the GTA? Then the Home Music Club may be for you!

The HMC was founded in 1897 in Toronto to allow those who loved music to meet regularly to perform classical music. We meet at least 8 times per year, from October to May, playing 60-90 minutes of chamber music, in varied programs represented by the entire spectrum of instruments and voices.

Although Concerts are free to attend, the Club collects money for charities at these events. This year, we will be collecting for The Regent Park School of Music. We also collect for the food bank at our end-of-year concert.

Performance Opportunities

Picture
We hold one monthly concert from October to May, mainly in members' homes, as well in some public venues, such as public libraries. Many of the members, having met through the Club, get together for other performances outside of the HMC, at retirement homes, nursing homes, weddings, and receptions. There are two types of membership: Performing Members and Associate members. Having at least 8 pre-arranged performance venues a year is a wonderful opportunity. Whether you're looking to showcase a piece you've worked on or to dress rehearse for other performances you have planned (e.g. recitals, competitions, etc.), you'll always play to a very appreciative, knowledgeable, and welcoming audience!

Master Classes

Picture
The HMC holds 1 master class per year, with acclaimed professionals such as Shauna Rolston, Moshe Hammer, Peter Longworth, Sarah Jeffrey, Eric Hall, and Jamie Parker. HMC members have also received coaching by the Gryphon Trio, St Lawrence String Quartet, Orford Quartet, and many others in non-HMC venues... and these are potential coaches in future for the HMC. Typically, three groups will perform and get coached on a movement of a piece of chamber music (string quartet, piano trio, clarinet quintet, etc.) in front of an audience of 15-30 members. Coaching is wonderful for maintaining or improving your playing...and is a wonderful experience! It gives you a goal for your practicing, it gives you insights from world-class professionals and all participants, whether players or those in the audience, learn from hearing others coached. Try it and you will love it!

The HMC Committee

The HMC committee members are elected from the membership. The committee oversees the planning and execution of the concert events, as well as the administration of Club affairs. There is one Annual General Meeting, at the end of each season, for which all members are invited.
